Sediment Get your own

0.0 m · surface sediment.foo

An idea notebook that forgets.

Post the rough version. The ideas people keep opening and adding to stay near the top, and the rest sinks out of the way on its own, so you never have to delete anything. Last week’s stuff comes back with one look. Bedrock takes a lot of people digging.

Each Sediment runs at its own address under sediment.foo, with its own accounts, ideas and sign-ins.

By invitation only, for now.

What it is

Somewhere to set ideas down.

Post a thought as text, code, a picture, a sketch or a voice note, or build it as a 3D model, a schematic or a short animation. Whatever shape it takes, it starts at the surface like everything else.

Each person has their own layers, and a core sample: a cut through their current and long-buried ideas. This page is laid out like one.

Seven kinds of idea · each sinks and rises by the same rules

  • Text

    Words, lists, notes.

  • Code

For the ideas that are easier said in code.

  • Picture

Drawn on the canvas, or a photo, or both.

  • Audio

    Voice notes and sounds.

  • 3D model

For the ideas that are easier shown in three dimensions.

  • Schematic

Drawn to scale or to a convention: floor plans, circuits, flowcharts.

  • Animation

Short animations, memes and GIFs, with sound.

How ideas sink

Leave it alone and it sinks.

Every idea starts at the surface. Then it goes down: 10 cm for each day it’s left alone, and 2 cm for each of its author’s other ideas picked up since, as the newer ones pile on top.

Depth is measured in pretend metres, and it decides the layer. The further down an idea is, the more it’s compacted into a shorter preview.

The ages count days alone. Newer ideas piling on top push an older one down sooner.

How ideas rise

Pick it back up and it rises.

Doing something with an idea lifts it back up, a little at a time. The deeper it has sunk, the more that takes.

  1. Lifts it1 m

    Open it

    Just looking counts.

  2. Lifts it2 m

    React to it

A +1, asking AI about it, or asking its author to collaborate.

  3. Lifts it3 m

    Build on it

Adding to it, or running with it: starting your own idea from it.

The same person doing the same thing again within a day doesn’t lift it any further, and a +1 lifts only the first time.

Sharing and the rest

Who sees it, who helps, where it goes.

Who sees it
Everyone, or only a circle (a group you make), your family, or just you. Ideas can carry an age rating too.
AI help
With your own key: you bring one from your AI provider. AI and other background work shows as little bubbles on your dashboard, and tells you when it’s done.
Export
Take an idea out as a project, with its code, sounds and pictures.
Linked projects
Link an idea to a project on GitHub, Google Drive or Dropbox.
On your phone
Install it as a web app, with notifications.
